Welcome to EYT! Welcome to the December issue of Electronic Young Telegraph. How do I run the December EYT? First, you will need to install the disk marked Library. Put the disk in the drive, double click the installer icon, click Continue then click Install. If you already have some issues of EYT on your computer, make sure that you put the Library into the same folder. Alternatively, if you are installing EYT for the first time, just click Install and the Library will be automatically put into a folder called "EYT folder" (although you can name the folder yourself if you wish). Once you have installed the Library, you are ready to install the December Issue. As before, put the disk in the drive, click Continue and then Install. Just remember to put the issue in the folder with the Library! When the issue has loaded, double click on the icon called December Issue to run EYT. How can I save space on my hard disk? Each issue of EYT takes up about 5Mb of space on your computer's hard drive. But if you're worried about running out of room on your hard disk ­ don't be! You can delete and re-install each issue of EYT as many times as you like. If you're short on space just keep the current issue installed. When a new disk arrives (or you want to play with an old issue again) delete the issue you have on your hard disk and install the new (or old!) one. However, there are some files that you should NOT delete... ...To run the 1995 issues of EYT (excluding December 1995) you must have RunAPM and Library files installed. If you delete these don't panic ­ you can re-install them using your original start up disks. ...To run any issue from December 1995 onwards you need the RunAPM and the Mainlib files installed. Again, don't panic if you accidently delete them. You can reinstall these files using your Library disk. No, you're not seeing double. Run APM will be installed from either the Library disk or the three disk start-up pack. How do I get out of EYT? Click the big "Q" on the left of the control bar to leave EYT. You can also quit by typing Q at any time. Technical issues: Your monitor Make sure your monitor is set to 256 colours by using the monitors control panel from the control panels folder in your Apple menu. You may run EYT with more colours (it won't look any different though), but you will definitely need to change the memory allocation of the RunAPM program accordingly (see the Memory allocation section). EYT requires that your monitor is at least 640 pixels wide by 480 high ­ this is the normal resolution for Apple 13" and 14" monitors. Some Macs may not have this resolution available ­ those using the Apple 12" RGB monitor, small screen Macs (Classic, SE, Colour Classic etc). Some PowerBooks only display 640*400 but may be able to still run EYT, though with some difficulty. If you are running on a Mac with a large screen, you cannot move the EYT window around ­ sorry, but that's a limitation of Authorware. The EYT window now appears in the top left corner of your monitor. This should improve usability when playing on PowerBooks with multiple monitors or on portrait monitors. If you background EYT, you may find that the menu bar appears and obscures part of the display (and may cause other problems) ­ you will have to quit EYT and relaunch it to fix this. Memory allocation EYT is supplied ready to run on a Mac with 4 Megabytes of RAM. If difficulties are encountered, such as graphics not displaying, you may need to increase the RAM allocation to RunAPM as described below. You may find that you need to start your Mac with extensions off (hold down the shift key on startup) if your system is taking too much of your RAM. If you have more than 4M RAM in your Mac, allocate more RAM to EYT as it will run faster. To do this, select the "RunAPM" application in the EYT folder, go to "Get info" in the file menu, and set the preferred (or current) size to something larger, say 5000k for an 8 Meg Mac, or 10000k for a 16 Meg one. The more you can allocate the better, up to about 10000k. The default setting is 2250k. You can check how much RAM your Mac has by looking in the "About this MacintoshŠ" entry in your Apple menu ­ the figure you need is the "Total memory" one. Do not set RunAPM to use more RAM than is displayed as the "Largest unused block" amount. Speed If you find that EYT is running slowly, make sure that you are not running any other programs, and check that the memory allocation suits your Mac. EYT's animations and interaction will be smoother on a faster Macintosh. Does my Power Mac make it go faster? Unfortunately, EYT is not accelerated for Power Macintosh. I can't make it work!
